The Research Institute
of Transport and Construction Technologies

      Today National Transport University is one of the leading education and scientific centers in independent Ukraine. Founded by the Decree of the Council of the People's Commissars of the USSR No 11.06-r of November, 7, 1944 Kyiv Automobile and Highway Institute (KAHI) always paid attention to the development of scientific activity of the academic staff.

      The work and research of a number of prominent and famous scholars and managers of higher education establishments is associated with the University’s name. These involve M.O.Lavrentyev, Doctor of Science in Technology, Physics & Mathematics, Academician and Vice-President of the National Academy of the USSR, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of several other academies, State Prize Laureate; he was recognized as the founder and Head of the Siberian Branch of the National Academy of the USSR; A.O.Vasylenko, a well known figure in the field of the machine-building industry, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Professor D.A.Rudenko, a prominent scientist and a builder ( State Prize Laureate), Professor V.A.Roiter, a physicist and a chemist (Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Honored Scientist of Ukraine); O.O.Sigov,a scientist and a metallurgist ( State Prize Laureate ); M.O.Kilchevsky, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; and other talented scientists such as I.I.Gihman, O.M.Penkov, S.I.Tetelbaum, I.A.Kyryenko, all of them being Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

      A considerable role in the development of science and creative activity of the research staff of the university belongs to the research sector (later a research department) organized in 1964, which in different years was successfully headed by V.D.Shevchenko, P.Y.Shumlyakivskiy, L.P.Barilovich.

      In 2000 on the basis of the scientific department the Research Institute of Transport and Construction Technologies was formed.

      The key research areas of the institute:

• Fundamental research of major scientific, social and humanitarian problems:
  • The culture of modern Ukrainian society: essence, national origin, functions, patterns of development.
  • Problems of education in modern conditions.
• Environmental preservation and steady development:
  • Optimization of traction-speed, economic and ecological characteristics of vehicles.
  • Reliability and system efficiency: methods, models of production technologies, repair and maintenance.
  • Mechanics of transport vehicles and constructions.
  • Methodological aspects of transport construction development under the conditions of transition to the market economy.
  • Construction and maintenance of highways, airfields, bridges and tunnels.
• New computer facilities and information technologies:
  • Problems of forming rational transport and logistic systems and providing the effective functioning of their components.
  • Development of mathematical models and computer modeling.
• New and resource saving technologies in energetics, industry and an industrial-agricultural complex:
  • Theoretical bases for energy saving technologies of road transportation systems.
  • Improvement of vehicle fuel efficiency and ecological indexes.
  • Theoretical bases for complex solution of rational choice of the vehicle.
• New substances and materials:
  • Creation and theoretical bases for new materials research.
• Integration of science and education:
  • Integration of science and education in accordance with the Bologna process.


     As of today, 515 employees do research at the institute. Among them there are 50 Doctors of Science, Professors; 215 Candidates of Science, Associate Professors; 19 full Members and Corresponding Members of the sectoral and intersectoral academies of Ukraine and other countries; 10 Honored Workers of Science and Technology of Ukraine; 5 Honored Workers of Transport of Ukraine; 4 Honored Workers of National education of Ukraine; 11 Laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and technology; 1 Honored builder of Ukraine; 1 Honored lawyer of Ukraine and 1 Honored Worker of Physical culture and sports of Ukraine.

     Research areas and their sources of financing:

     Among financial sources which are used by the university, the following should be mentioned:
     the state budget (fundamental research and applied developments), that are financed from the budget of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (23% out of the total amount);
     the state order;
     the state budget DFFD;
     self-financing, at the expenses of enterprises and organizations (77% out of the total amount);

     In 2008, proportion of the state budgeted research was 23 %, and self-financing research amounted to 77 %.

     25% of research work is carried out by the academic staff within the limits of their workload.
