Head of the Department –
Gulyayev Valery Ivanovich, Doctor of Science (Technology),
Professor, State prize-winner of Ukraine in the
sphere of science and technology, Honoured Activist
of Science and Technology of Ukraine.

The department was founded in 1944. Its first head was Academician M.A. Lavrentyev. After his departure to Moskow, the department was headed by Prof. V.A. Zmorovich, Corresponding Member of the Ukranian Academy of Sciences I.I. Gihman and Prof. M.J. Bilyk. From 1952 to 1972 the department was headed by Prof. B.V. Krukovsky, who had worked at the department as professor since 1949.
From 1972 to 1980 the department was headed by Doctor of Science, Prof. A.F. Ryabov, who entered the department as assistant in 1959 and defended his Candidate degree (1960) and Doctor of Science degree (1970) dissertations.
In 1989 Doctor of Science (Mathematics), Prof. V.M. Shurenkov began to supervise the department. He was widely known abroad as a specialist in the sphere of ergodic theory of random processes.
Since 1994 Doctor of Science(Technology), Prof. V.I. Gulyayev has been holding the chair of Mathematics
Senior lecturer I.M. Golperin was one of the most qualified teachers, who had worked at the department since its foundation for 45 years. He was a well-known mathematician, remarkable specialist in educational methods who paid great attention to research work in the sphere of complex variable theory.
At present 23 academic staff work at the department, 17 of them have
scientific degrees, 6 specialists have worked for more than 30 years. They are senior lecturers
V.G. Degtyar (since 1970), S.V. Kovalchuk (since1967), B.M. Zhyrnov (since1973),
T.P.Kleshchevnikova (since 1971) N.V. Degtyarjeva (since 1961), V.G. Gorbunovich
(since1970).

The staff of the department
|
The department teaches both full-time and extra-mural students the following courses:
- Higher Mathematics;
- Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics;
- Mathematical Programming;
- Theory of Surfaces.
Now four post graduate students are working towards their dissertations under the supervision of Prof. V.I. Gulyayev.
The key research interests of the department are related to different questions of theoretical and applied mechanics, such as: vibrations of rotating shells, electro-elastic vibrations, hydro-mechanics of underground waters, analysis of physical model of Van-Der-Pole in auto vibrations and others.
Essential contribution into the research work has been made by Prof. V.I. Gulyayev, who has prepared 3 doctors of science and 51 PhD, particularly for Nigeria, China, Mauritius, Lebanon, Algeria, Togo, Iraq, Vietnam and other countries. His main research interests include;
- nonclassical and classical theories of elastic shells of complicated shapes;
- dynamic stability of nonlinear mechanical systems;
- celestial mechanics and mechanics of space flights;
- dynamics of robotic systems;
- dynamics of elastic thin wall rotors in compound rotation;
- seismics of tectonic media;
- mechanics of drill strings in hyper deep bore-holes.
The department attracts students to research work. They participate in scientific conferences of NTU. The department has strong links with Ukrainian academic institutions.
From 1974 to 1978 senior lecturers V.G. Degtyar, B.M. Zhyrnov,
R. Ya. Maydanyuk worked abroad and took part in preparation of national cadres for Algeria.
Prof. V.M. Shurenkov delivered scientific reports in Switzerland and Finland. Prof. V.I. Gulyayev has been invited to perform research work abroad (Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the USA).
The department has published more than 700 scientific and methodological papers and 21 monographs, including:
