The department was founded in December, 1944. The first head of the department was S.A. Glagolev (1944-1950).

Then the department at various times was headed by Alabusheva Oksana Mykolaivna (1950-1977); Gorbachova Larysa Ivanivna (1977-1985); Ivchenko Liana Leonidivna (1985-1994); Shyshkova Galyna Yukhymivna (1994-1999); Rovnina Natalia Illivna (1999-2006).

Since 2006 Astanina Natalia Valentynivna has been holding the chair of the department.

As of September, 2011 English, German, French and Latin are taught at the department.

The department trains Bachelors, Masters, and Postgraduates at the following faculties and institutes: Automobile Mechanic Faculty, Road Construction Faculty, Faculty of Economics, Management and Law, Faculty of Transport and Information Technologies, the Institute of Correspondence Education and Distance Learning, the Institute of Transport Economics and Business. Preparatory courses have been organized to prepare Bachelors for Master’s entrance examinations.

Scientific research of the department is focused on a state budget theme. In 2007, lecturers of the department began to work on: "Teaching future specialists professionally-oriented speech in foreign languages ”, which will be followed by a methodical guide.

The department is constantly working on in-service training of lecturers. Several teaching assistants are doing a PhD course.

Lecturers of the department present their papers at university scientific conferences in Ukraine and abroad.

The Olympiad among students interested in studying foreign languages is annually held at the department, and students participate in student scientific conferences as well.
