     The department was organized in 1966. Then it was called the Department of Road Transport and Safety, and the head was Associate Professor Hrinchenko Trokhym Ivanovych. The first members of the faculty were Associate Professors Rusiyev H.V., Babin L.V., Vorkut A.I., Salieyeva H.P., Stelmahivs’kyi Y.S., Mospan Y.P., senior lecturer Tsymbalov V.V., assistants Kybardina N.V., Bashtakova E.I., Tsitsel’s’kyi K.M., Kalinin O.H., who aimed at giving students knowledge of road transportation development and road traffic safety laws.

     Over time the department has undergone a transformation of name and greatly expanded range of areas of training activities. In 1976 it became the Department of Organization and Management led by Associate Professor Bidniak Mykhailo Nestorovych. In 1982 it was given a new name of “Department of Road Transport Operation and Road Traffic Engineering”, headed by Associate Professor Mykhailenko Volodymyr Ivanovych. It was staffed by highly qualified lecturers and scholars. They were Associate Professors Vorkut A.I., Mayak M.M., Fedotov L.V., Chetveruhin B.M., Stel’mahivs’kyi Y.S., Tsitsel’s’kyi K.M., Bilokobyla Y.Y., Habutdinov R.A., Salieyeva H.P., Polishchuk V.P., Yeresov V. I., Dziuba O.P., Didkovs’kyi V.A., Kovalyk A.H., Bohachenko V.M., Yatskivs’kyi L.Y. From 1991 to 1993 the Head of Department was Prof. Vorkut A.I. In 1993 the department was named as "Transport Systems and Marketing" and, to 2003, led by Anatoliy I. Vorkut, Doctor of Science in Technology, Professor, Academician of the Transport Academy of Ukraine.

     Under the decision of University Academic Council of June 26, 2008, as well as aiming to improve quality assurance, management of material resources of the university and teachers’ workload distribution two new departments "Transport Technologies" and " Transport Systems and Road Traffic Safety" were formed on the basis of Transport systems and Marketing Department.

     At the department 6 researchers defended doctoral dissertations. They are Vorkut A.I. (theory of transport processes and systems), Chetverukhin B.M. (automatics and information measurements in transport systems), Fedotov L.V. (information systems of urban transport systems), Ignatenko O.S. (scientific basis for improving the transport systems of cities), Polishchuk V.P. (development of theoretical basis and practical methods for automation of road traffic control), Mayak M.M. (energy issues), Habutdinov R.A. (theory of resource-saving activity of vehicle).

     From 2003 to 2010 Head of the Department of Transport Technology was Yatskivskyy Lubomir Yuriyovuch Candidate of Science in Technology, Professor. Author of over 100 published works, including 4 books, 8 manuals, prepared by 3 graduate students who have successfully defended their dissertations. Rewarded with the Peter Graves' orders: "Red Banner", "Krasny Banner of Labor", "Red Stars".

     Department staff has been conducting fruitful research work. Over the past 30 years, the department has formed a very strong scientific school. Stated researches represent a kind of scientific and teaching package. Thus, developed basis for the theory of transport processes and systems provides the courses "Theory of transport processes and systems" and "Technology and organization of freight road transport” with teaching aids and student’s course guides. Important practical work has been done to design road traffic engineering plans in different cities of Ukraine. The main results of transport technologies research are described in 2 books (by prof. Vorkut A.I.), 40 manuals (by A.H. Kovalyk, M.M. Mayak, R.A. Habutdinov, O.M. Kosharnyi, N.T. Kunda, O.M. Kunyts'ka, O.S. Ignatenko, O.Y.Kotsiuk, S.V. Ozirs'kyi, L.Y. Yatskivs'kyi), 13 monographies and 15 copyright certificates. The last 4 years saw publication of the following works: manuals "Fundamentals of Marketing" (Y.Y. Bilokobyla, Prof. L.Y.Yatskivs'kyi), "General course of transport" (Prof. L.Y. Yatskivs'kyi, D.V.Zerkalov) in 2 volumes, textbook "Vantazhoznavstvo" (All about cargo) E. Vil'kovs'kyi, I.I. Kel'man, Bakulich O.O.), textbook "Systemology on transport" (Prof. V.P. Polishchuk, Pr. O.T. Lanovyi) in 4 volumes, "Operations research in transport systems” (Prof. N.T. Kunda), manuals "Fundamentals of the theory of transport processes and systems "(Prof. L.Y. Yatskivs'kyi, S.V. Shiriayeva) and "Legal control of road traffic " (Prof. L.Y. Yatskivs’kyi, V.Z. Dokunikhin), "Methods of scientific researches" (Prof. N.T. Kunda), "Organization of the international freight automobile transportations" (Prof. N.T. Kunda).

     Under the decision of University Academic Council of June 30, 2011, as well as aiming to improve quality assurance, management of material resources of the university and teachers’ workload distribution two new departments "Transport Technologies" and "International transportation and customs" were formed on the basis of Transport Technologies Department.

     The department focuses on the following main areas of research:

     Division of transport technologies (Head - Doctor of Science in Technology, Professor Khabutdinov R.A.) provides training of specialists of Transport Technologies, focusing on the development of the theory of transport processes and systems, and on this basis - training for professional orientation: transportation and management on transport.

SPECIALISTS TRAINING

     Formation and development of transport technologies defines the orientation of multilevel training of experts relating to management on transport. Specialties are not determined by modes of transport but demands for professionals versed in integrated transport systems. NTU programmes provide for degrees after four or five years of studies in the proposed field:
     • Bachelor’s degree;
     • Specialist (engineer’s degree)
           – transport engineer;
     • Master’s degree - transport engineer

     Specialty granted by the department in the field of Transport technologies is "Organization of transportation and management on transport (automobile)”.

     The department conducts educational activity for full-time basis, at the Institute of Distant Education and the Institute of Economics and Business and has laboratory facilities and a multimedia class.

     As of 2012 the department provided for about 10 subject matters, the main ones are:
     Principles of cargo operations;
     Organization of cargo transportation;
     Freight traffic;
     Transportation activities;
     Logistical systems;
     Resource-saving technologies in road transport;
     Supply chain management;
     Design of transport and technological systems of freight traffic;
     Modern transport technologies;
     Design transportation storage facilities.

     Manufacturing practice of students takes place in transport enterprises. Topics of graduation works cover a question of the organization of cargo, passengers and international transportations. Some of the graduation projects and master's works include the research results obtained by the students during their studies at the University. Group graduation works are in practice.

     Annual Scientific Conference of the teaching staff and students. For example, in 2011 to 67th Conference in the field of "Transport Technologies" was attended by 58 students including:
     • Organization of Transportation and Management on Transport Section - 47 students;
     • Operations Research and Systems Analysis Section - 11 students.

     Students successfully participate in the Republican Contests of student scientific works.
