     The head of the department is Kirkevych Maria Petrivna, associate professor, Honored Worker of Physical Education and Sport of Ukraine, Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR, Olympic champion of 1976 in Montreal, 1973 World Championship Bronze Medalist (1973) and World Championship Silver Medalist (1975), the seven –time owner of European Champions Cup, the ten-time handball champion of the USSR, Honored Citizen of Kyiv, a holder of the Medal for Labour Merit. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of NTU she was awarded the Order of Princess Olga III. She has been working in NTU since 1982.

      The Department of Physical Education and Sports was created in 1944 as a structural division of Kiev Automobile and Highway Institute.

      The first head of the department Kanter Illya Mykhailovych worked from 1944 to 1954. At that time the department had one lecturer and two labarotory assistants.

      In 1954-1955 the head of the department was Rakov Yevgeniy Oleksandrovych and from 1955 to 1986 Kozyr Georgiy Vlasovych was in charge of the department.

      In 1971 the Sports Center of KAHI was built and since then the department of physical education has been located in its present premises.

      In 1986-1987 the head of the department was Snastin Eduard Mykhailovych, Candidate of Science in Pedagogies. The following two years Dryzheruk Anatoliy Andriyovych, Honored Master of Sports, held the chair of the department.

      In 1989 Dr. Semybratskiy Borys Oleksiyovych was elected the head of the department and he held the post till 2005.

      The most popular with students is motorcycle sport. Traditional NTU Cross-country Motorcycle Race is held annually. NTU motorcycle team is a many-times champion and prize winner of Ukraine Championship. More than 50 students – motorcyclists hold the title of Master of Sports. Over 30 years this work was managed by Bratkovskiy Leonid Yukhymovych, Honored Motocross Trainer of Ukraine, Master of Sports of the USSR, who trained 27 Masters of Sports.

      Dr. Danilov Oleksandr Oleksiyovych, Candidate of Science in Pedagogies, a holder of two diplomas of Sport Committee of the USSR, an International Olympic Committee's diploma and the Medal for Labour Merit has been working at the department since 1991.

      Danilov O.O. led a scientific integrated group responsible for training of the USSR men's handball team. In 2003 he designed a handball curriculum for sports schools, Olympic Reserve schools and schools of sports excellence, which was published by the State Committee on Physical Education and Sport in Kyiv.

Grytsaenko Ganna Oleksandrivna, senior lecturer, provides training in swimming.
Sytnyk Borys Stepanovych, senior lecturer, provides training in kettlebell lifting.
Shtepka Grygoriy Petrovych, senior lecturer, provides training in track and field athletics.
Levytskiy Oleksandr Leonidovych, teaching assistant, provides training in mini-football.
Porubov Vadym Grygorovych, teaching assistant, provides training in basketball.
Ridkous Volodymyr Volodymyrovych is a table tennis trainer.

     In 1993 a fifth-year KAHI student Khorunzhiy V.I. became the Kickboxing World Champion.

     In 2009 a fourth-year student of NTU Davydov Ihor, Master of Sport in track and field athletics, won the following prizes: Minsk Grand-Prix, European Grand –Prix second place in Saloniki, European Grand –Prix eighth place in Belgrade, Ukrainian Championship first place. A third-year student Golub Sergiy, Master of Sport (hammer throwing), won the silver medal in the Winter Championship of Ukraine in Yalta, the Ukrainian Cup in Kyiv and took European Championship fourteenth place in Serbia.

     The academic activity of the department of physical education and sports includes training in athletic gymnastics, swimming, basketball, volleyball, mini-football, table tennis, badminton, kettlebell lifting, track and field athletics and cross training in the credit framework.

     The department holds Annual Students Sports Competition in 9 sports such as cross country, table tennis, swimming, basketball, volleyball, badminton, mini-football, track and field athletics, kettlebell lifting.

     Students take part in municipal and district competitions and take top places in the most of them.

     The department holds Annual Staff Sports Competition in the following sports: mini-football, table tennis, badminton, swimming, volleyball and ice fishing. Also the University's staff participates in a so-called "Competition for Health" among the higher education institutions of Kyiv Pechersk district.

     The teaching staff of the department includes: 3 associate professors, 8 senior lecturers, 10 teaching assistants, 2 laboratory assistants, with 3 of them holding the title of Master of Sport, 1- being the holder of the Honored Master of Sport title. The University has a Sports Center with a 25 meter swimming pool, gyms for wrestling and popular sports. Its address is 38, Kikvidze Str.

     In 2005 a football pitch with artificial surface was built. Construction of tennis courts and volleyball pitch with modern surface was finished in 2006. A basketball pitch, badminton court and athletic gymnastics area with modern equipment were opened in 2008. A new fitness centre was opened in 2009.

     Construction of another new playground is the next thing on the agenda.
