History of the department “Transport Systems and Road Safety” started in Kyiv Automobile and Highway Institute, which was organized on November 7th, 1944, as department of transportation and traffic safety. Grinchenko Trohym Ivanovych, associate professor, was appointed as Head of Department. The first members of Department were associate professors Rusyev H.V., Babin L.V., Vorkut A.I., Salyeyeva G.P., Stelmahivskyy Ju.S., Mospan Ju.P., senior lecturer Tsymbalov V.V., assistants Kybardina N.V., Bashtakova E.I., Tsitselskyy K.M., Kalinin O.H.
Over the years the department has undergone a certain transformation of the title and greatly expanded a range of areas of training activities. In 1976 it became a department of organization and management led by Professor Bidnyak Mikhayil Nesterovych, and in 1982 it became the department of vehicle operation and traffic organization. It was led by Professor Mikhailenko Volodymyr Ivanovych. The department was staffed with highly qualified lecturers and research workers. They were associate professors Vorkut A.I., Mayak N.M., Fedotov L.V., Chetveruhin B.M., Stelmahivskyy Ju.S., Tsytselskyy K.M., Bilokobyla E.Ju., Habutdinov R.A., Salyeyeva G.P., Polishchuk V.P., YeresovV.I., Dziuba O.P., Didkovskiy V.A., Kovalyk A.G., Bohachenko V.M., Yatskivskyy L.Yu . From 1991 to 1993 Head of Department was Professor Vorkut A.I.
In 1993 the department was named as “Transport Systems and Marketing”. It was led and headed up to year 2003 by Anatoliy Vorkut – Doctor of Science in Technology, Professor, Academician of the Transport Academy of Ukraine. Since 2003 the department was headed by Professor Yatskivskyy Lubomir Yuriyovych. Scientific areas of the department included theory of transport processes and systems (Vorkut A.I.), automatics and information measurement in transport systems (Chetveruhin B.M.), information systems of transport systems of cities (Fedotov L.V.), the scientific foundation for improvement of cities’ transport systems (Ignatenko A.S.), the development of theoretical foundations and practical methods for automation of traffic management on roads (Polishchuk V.P.), problems of energy saving (Mayak M.M.), theory of resource-saving activity of vehicle (Habutdinov R.A. ). In June 2008, the department of transport systems and road safety and department of transport technologies were created on basis of department of transport systems and marketing.
Department staff conducts fruitful research work. Over past 30 years, the department has established scientific schools led by Professors Vorkut A.I., Chetveruhin B.M., Polishchuk V.P. Department studies represent a kind of scientific and educational-methodical complex. Thus, the developed foundation of the theory of transport processes and systems is the methodical base of courses “Theory of Transport Processes and Systems” and “Organizational Technology and Management of Trucking Industry”, developed foundations of operations research are methodological base of the course “Operations Research in Transport Systems”, developed basis of the theory of traffic and it’s organization is the base of the courses “Traffic Engineering”, “Technology of Traffic Engineering Design”.
The main results of research in the sphere of Transport Technologies are presented in 2 books (Professor Vorkut A.I.), in 5 volumes of the textbook “System science in transport” (Professors Gavrilov E.V., Dmytrychenko M.F., Dolya V.K., Lanovyi O.T., Polishchuk V.P., Associate Professor Lynnyk I.E.) and in many manuals (authors Kovalyk A.G., Mayak M.M., Habutdinov R.A., Dzyuba O.P., Koszarny O.M., Kunda N.T., Kunitsky E.N., Ignatenko O.S., Kotsyuk O.Ja., Ozirskyy S.V., Yatskivskyy L.Yu), in 16 monographs and in 16 author’s certificates.

Training of specialists
Formation and development of transport systems define the orientation of multilevel training of specialists for transport control. While determining specialties we take into consideration both the needs of professionals for integrated systems and modes of transport. Levels of training, which students are educated in:
• Bachelor;
• Specialist-engineer;
• Master.
The department graduates specialists in:
• transport systems (specialized orientation: freight transportation systems and logistics management on transport, transport systems of cities);
• traffic engineering.
The department trains full-time students as well as students of the Institute of Correspondence Education and Distance Learning and the Institute of Economics and Business in Transport. The department has laboratory facilities and computer-equipped laboratories.
Main courses taught at the department:
• interaction of modes of transport;
• operations research in transport systems;
• fundamentals of the theory of systems and control;
• marketing;
• organization of traffic;
